This one-skein scarf is worked from the bottom point upwards, using different stitch rows to create definition, movement, and a gorgeous wearable finish.

This is a lovely project if you enjoy texture, colour, and accessories that feel a little more special than a basic scarf. Make it in warm sunset shades, natural earthy tones, bold yarn cakes, or use up those yarn scraps you absolutely cannot part with. We all have that box. No judgement here.

Why You’ll Love This Crochet Scarf

The Setting Sun scarf is designed for Crocheters who love a project with texture, colour, and a bit of personality. It is worked from the bottom point upwards, gradually growing into a triangle shape until it reaches the widest top edge.

Each row uses a different stitch or stitch combination to create definition and interest across the fabric. That means the scarf stays enjoyable as you work, rather than becoming one long repeat that sends your brain wandering off to the biscuit cupboard.

The finished scarf has a soft boho feel, especially when made in warm sunset yarn shades. It works beautifully as a statement accessory over a plain jumper, denim jacket, autumn coat, or layered with relaxed festival-style outfits.

If you prefer visual help, the crochet along video walks you through the scarf step by step. This makes the pattern much more approachable if you are an adventurous beginner and want to build confidence with textured stitches, row changes, and shaping a triangle scarf.

The Yarn and Feel

For the sample scarf, I used Sirdar Jewelspun in 843 Setting Sun. This yarn gives the scarf its beautiful shifting colour effect without needing lots of yarn changes. The warm, blended tones create that relaxed sunset look that suits the bohemian shape perfectly.

Sirdar Jewelspun is an aran-weight yarn, which gives the scarf enough body to show off the stitch texture while still keeping the finished piece soft and wearable. It has enough drape for a scarf but enough structure for the triangle shape to sit nicely when worn.

Tip: if you use a self-striping yarn cake or variegated aran yarn, let the colour changes do the work. This pattern already has plenty of texture, so the right yarn can make it look far more complicated than it actually is. We love a clever shortcut.

Yarn Alternatives

You can use any aran-weight yarn cake or colour-changing yarn with a minimum of around 500 metres / 547 yards. If your yarn has more meterage than the original, you can repeat rows to make the scarf larger and use more of the skein.

Similar Yarn Alternatives

If you cannot get Sirdar Jewelspun, choose an aran-weight yarn with good drape and enough colour movement to show off the scarf texture.

  • Sirdar Jewelspun Aran: closest match for colour changes, softness, and drape.
  • Aran yarn cakes: ideal if you want long colour transitions without weaving in lots of ends.
  • Stash yarn: perfect for a scrappy boho scarf, as long as your yarn weights are similar.
  • DK yarn: can be used for a lighter scarf, but you may need more row repeats.

Hook, Gauge and Tools

The sample scarf is worked with a 5mm / H hook. Gauge is listed as 18 stitches and 24 rows = 10cm / 4″ square. For a scarf, gauge is a little more forgiving than a fitted garment, but it still matters if you want the finished size and drape to match the pattern.

If your fabric feels too stiff, try going up a hook size. If it looks too loose or the texture disappears, go down slightly. The goal is a fabric that feels flexible, not rigid, while still showing off the stitch definition.

Skill builder: this pattern is a lovely way to practise working different stitch rows while maintaining even tension across a growing triangle shape.

Can I Make the Scarf Larger or Smaller?

Yes, this scarf is easy to customise. Because it grows from the bottom point upwards, you can repeat rows to increase the width and length. This is especially useful if your yarn cake has more meterage than the original yarn or if you prefer a larger wrap-style scarf.

For a smaller scarf, stop earlier once you are happy with the width and depth. For a larger shawl-style version, keep adding rows until it sits the way you want across the shoulders.

Tip: if you are adding extra rows, keep enough yarn aside for the edging. Nothing ruins a peaceful project quite like playing yarn chicken with three inches of border left.

Using a Different Yarn Weight

You can use a thinner yarn and smaller hook for a lighter, more delicate version, but you will likely need more rows to reach the same finished size. This can create a beautiful spring scarf with more drape and movement.

Thicker yarn can be used, but I would be cautious. Some textured stitches, especially puff-style stitches, can become bulky very quickly with heavier yarns. If you choose a chunky yarn, make a small swatch first to check that the fabric still feels comfortable and not overly dense.

Try to use a matching yarn weight for the main scarf and the edging. This helps prevent the border from pulling, waving, or distorting the triangle shape.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using a much thicker edging yarn than the main scarf yarn
  • Forgetting to save yarn for the border
  • Pulling the turning chains too tightly and narrowing the edges
  • Skipping gauge completely if you want the same finished size
  • Changing yarn weights mid-scarf without checking the fabric width
