Easy Crochet Cotton Dress Pattern For Children
Crochet Cotton Confetti Dress Pattern
A sweet and beginner-friendly crochet cotton dress pattern for children, made with simple half double crochet, soft cotton-blend yarn, practical pockets and button straps. This easy handmade dress is light, wearable and perfect for summer days, holidays, garden play and everyday layering.
This Crochet Cotton Confetti Dress is one of those projects that feels pretty, practical and properly useful. It has a simple shape, soft pastel colour changes, button straps and little pockets — because even tiny people need somewhere to keep very important treasures, snacks and mystery crumbs.
I designed this dress as an easy throw-on summer piece for Plum. With British summertime on the way, I wanted something light, durable and comfortable enough for everyday wear, but still special enough to feel handmade and lovely.

Why You’ll Love This Crochet Cotton Dress
This dress is simple, sweet and practical. The half double crochet fabric gives it a lovely defined texture without making the project too complicated, and the cotton blend keeps the dress comfortable enough for warm weather and everyday wear.
The design is worked in front and back pieces, then seamed at the sides. This keeps the construction manageable and beginner friendly while still creating a proper wearable garment. The button straps make it easy to put on and adjust, and the pockets add the cutest little finishing detail.
Fit tip: if you are making this for a child who is between sizes, check the waist circumference and finished length before starting. Children’s clothing needs comfort and movement, not a “just about fits if nobody breathes” situation.
The shape is easy to wear over a T-shirt, vest top or lightweight long-sleeve layer, making it useful beyond one season. Choose soft pastels for the original confetti look, or use a solid cotton shade for a simpler everyday dress.

The Yarn and Feel
Cotton is a lovely choice for summer crochet clothing because it gives a cool, breathable finish with beautiful stitch definition. For this dress, I used a medium worsted cotton/acrylic blend yarn so it still had that clean cotton feel, but with a little extra stretch for comfort and movement.
I always recommend choosing a washable cotton or cotton-blend yarn for children’s clothing. It needs to feel soft, hold its shape and survive plenty of washing — because handmade dresses are gorgeous, but toddlers are not known for gently respecting laundry requirements.
Gauge: 27 stitches and 36 rows to 10cm x 10cm / 4″ x 4″.
Yardage for size 3–4 years: 440 yards.
Tip: if you swap yarns, try to stay close to the original medium worsted weight and check your gauge before starting. A pure cotton may feel slightly firmer, while an acrylic blend may add more stretch and softness.
Yarn Alternatives
If you’re unable to source the original yarn, look for a washable cotton or cotton-blend yarn in a similar medium/worsted weight. The best alternatives will feel soft against the skin, hold their shape well, and have enough structure for the pockets and straps.

If you choose a different fibre blend, make sure the fabric still feels soft enough for children’s clothing and does not become too heavy once worked up. The finished dress should have structure, but still feel comfortable and easy to move in.

Stitches Used in This Crochet Cotton Dress
This Crochet dress uses simple stitches and shaping to create a soft, wearable fabric. The original pattern is written in US Crochet terms, but I’ve included the UK equivalents below so you can recognise the stitches easily.
UK Crochet Terms
Chain: Used to begin sections, shape rows and create the foundation of your work.
Half Treble Crochet: Yarn over, insert hook into the stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through all three loops on the hook.
Half Treble Decrease: Used to reduce stitches neatly and shape the dress through the waist and upper section.
US Crochet Terms
Chain: Used to begin sections, shape rows and create the foundation of your work.
Half Double Crochet: Yarn over, insert hook into the stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through all three loops on the hook.
Half Double Crochet Decrease: Used to reduce stitches neatly and shape the dress through the waist and upper section.
The half double crochet stitch creates a fabric that is softer and quicker than single crochet while still giving enough structure for a children’s dress. Keep your tension even so the panels match neatly when seaming.
