Chunky Crochet Sweater – Weave Stitch

I am completely in love with this chunky basket weave crochet sweater! From the moment I finished my first swatch, I knew I had created something truly special. Unlike any other crochet sweater pattern I’ve seen, this design combines comfort, style, and texture in a way that makes it irresistible to wear—and to make.

The idea began with a desire to experiment with the basket weave stitch, a stitch usually reserved for blankets and cushions. I wondered: could it work in a wearable piece? The answer is a resounding yes. The texture adds depth and interest to the sweater, giving it a luxurious, tactile feel while remaining practical and cozy for autumn and winter.

The pattern is written from the bottom up, with ribbing worked in rows back and forth at the hem, cuffs, and neckline. You’ll make a front piece, back piece, and two sleeves, then seam them together for a perfectly finished garment. I love how this construction allows for easy adjustments in length and sleeve width, so you can create a sweater that truly fits your body shape.

Why I Chose the Basket Weave Stitch

The basket weave stitch gives the sweater a unique texture that makes it stand out from ordinary chunky sweaters. Its alternating raised and recessed columns create a tactile, structured fabric, perfect for showing off variegated or marbled yarns. The stitch is forgiving, too—if you make a small mistake, it blends beautifully into the overall texture.

While the basket weave is often used for blankets or cushions, it works wonderfully for a sweater because it produces a dense yet flexible fabric. The texture adds warmth without being heavy or bulky. Plus, the visual interest means you don’t need fancy colourwork to make the sweater look expensive or intricate.

Yarn Choices and Alternatives

For my sweater, I used James C Brett Marble Chunky, a super soft, marbled yarn that adds depth and character to the basket weave stitch. Its muted autumn tones—soft greens, creams, and browns—complement the texture beautifully, making the sweater feel cozy and timeless.

If you don’t have Marble Chunky on hand, there are plenty of alternatives that work just as well:

  • Stylecraft Special Chunky – soft, affordable, and available in a wide range of colours.
  • King Cole Big Value Chunky – excellent drape, perfect for garments, with a smooth texture.
  • Sirdar Happy Chunky – soft, squishy, and ideal for autumn and winter sweaters.
  • Drops Andes or Nepal – if you want a wool-blend option with a bit more warmth.

All of these alternatives have similar weights and drape, so you can experiment with colours and textures without changing the pattern itself.

Sizing and Fit

This pattern is designed to be versatile and wearable for a wide range of sizes, from X Small all the way to XXX Large. The relaxed fit makes it flattering for all body types, with subtle shaping at the waist and a slightly longer back hem for coverage.

The sizing is as follows:

  • X Small (Small, Medium, Medium/Large, Large, X Large, XX Large, XXX Large)

Because the sweater is worked from the bottom up, it’s easy to adjust the length of the body and sleeves to suit your personal preference. Want a slightly cropped version? Shorten the number of rows in the main body. Prefer longer sleeves? Add a few extra rows before working the cuff ribbing. This flexibility is one of my favourite things about this pattern—it’s truly adaptable.

Step-by-Step Construction

The sweater is worked in three main pieces: the front, back, and two sleeves. Here’s a general overview of how it’s constructed:

  1. Bottom Ribbing: The hem ribbing is worked back and forth in rows using front post and back post double crochet (UK: trebles). This creates a snug, stretchy finish that keeps the sweater in place.
  2. Main Body: The basket weave stitch begins immediately after the ribbing. It’s worked in alternating front post and back post double crochets to create the signature textured columns. The body is worked to your desired length before shaping the armholes.
  3. Armhole Shaping: Simple decreases are worked to shape the armholes, keeping the basket weave pattern intact.
  4. Sleeves: The sleeves are worked flat from the cuff up, with ribbing at the wrist. Once the sleeve reaches the desired length, you increase gradually to match the width of the armhole.
  5. Assembly: After all pieces are complete, you seam the shoulders first, attach the sleeves, and then seam the sides. The neckline ribbing is added last, giving a neat, finished look.

Tips for Beginners

Even if you haven’t worked the basket weave stitch before, this pattern is beginner-friendly! The stitch is straightforward once you understand the alternation of front and back post double crochets.

  • Practice first: Make a small swatch to get used to the post stitches before starting the main sweater.
  • Use stitch markers: These help keep track of the columns and rows, especially for larger sizes.
  • Check gauge: With chunky yarn, it’s easy to go off gauge. Take a moment to measure your swatch—it will save frustration later!

The large stitches mean the sweater works up quickly, so beginners get the satisfaction of seeing real progress in just a few hours.

Tips for Experienced Crocheters

Experienced crocheters can play with variations:

  • Change yarn textures: Try a boucle, chenille, or tweed yarn for an interesting twist.
  • Colourwork: Introduce stripes or marled effects by combining two colours of chunky yarn.
  • Customize fit: Add extra shaping at the waist, adjust sleeve length, or make a cropped version for a modern look.

Even with the simple basket weave, there’s plenty of room for creativity while keeping the pattern wearable and cozy.

Styling Your Sweater

The chunky basket weave sweater is incredibly versatile. Here are some ways to wear it:

  • Casual day: Pair with jeans and ankle boots for a relaxed, stylish look.
  • Layered: Add a collared shirt underneath for a preppy twist or layer over a long-sleeve turtleneck for extra warmth.
  • Mini-me version: Make a smaller size for children; they’ll love the cozy texture, and it’s adorable to have matching sweaters.
  • Skirt styling: Tuck the front slightly into a skirt for a chic, effortless look.

Because the sweater is textured, it pairs well with simple, solid-colour pieces. Let the basket weave shine as the statement feature.

Gifting and Selling

This chunky crochet sweater makes a wonderful handmade gift. Its cozy texture and stylish fit mean it’s suitable for family members, friends, or even a special treat for yourself.

If you’re thinking about selling, the pattern is quick to work up thanks to the chunky yarn, making it ideal for craft stalls or online shops. With options from X Small to XXX Large, you can cater to a wide range of customers or gift recipients.

Care and Longevity

Chunky yarn sweaters require a little love to keep them looking their best:

  • Washing: Check the yarn label, but most chunky acrylic or wool-blend yarns can be hand washed or washed on a gentle cycle.
  • Drying: Lay flat to dry to maintain the shape and texture of the basket weave. Avoid hanging—it can stretch the sweater.
  • Storage: Fold rather than hang to prevent stretching, and store in a cool, dry place.

With proper care, your basket weave sweater can be a wardrobe staple for years.
