Gilet free crochet pattern - The Erin faux fur gilet

Faux fur gilet free crochet pattern

The handmade fur gilet free crochet pattern! Who wants one....I do!!! 🙂

I have been experimenting lately with things I see for sale in shops. I see a jumper. dress, hoodie and I think...."I could crochet that".

This week I saw a faux fur gilet and it was a bit short for my liking. My little Alice is 2 and on the very dainty side, so it was short by most standards and a price I thought was a bit much.

So, I went to my local yarn store.....HEAVEN. I had a little scope about and found this chinchilla yarn by James C Brett. Perfect! Its soooo soft, imagine all those faux fur pillows you see in the home stores that you just have to brush with the back of your hand to feel the ultimate softness - this is it!

Super chunky and soft, I knew it would make a quick and thick project which was exactly what I wanted.

Make in less than 2 hours!

As usual, I put the kids in bed get myself cosy on the sofa with a film and start whatever project Im working on.

I had already designed how I wanted to make each piece and construction is a no brainer, this pattern is so simple, I guarantee you will be making more than one!

It did surprise me when I had worked up both the front lapels in 45 mins and was moving on to the back piece!

Yarn brainstorm!

As I was working, I thought this would work just as good with eyelash yarn. You could mix 2 colours together to get the multi tone and thickness.

Take a peek at  a huge range of eyelash yarn in my store and it would be a lot cheaper than the chinchilla yarn....however, patience isn't my virtue when it comes to crochet and I wanted to get started that night!

Handmade is best!!

My babies have such cool clothes that nobody else has.

To be able to see something and think "I could make that" never gets old and I get to choose the colours to my exact tastes and textures!

Alice has her winter wardrobe sorted and most of her outerwear and jumpers are handmade...so special! I keep all of the things I make just for her, my beautiful little model, I hope she shares my handmade passion and these will fill her with creativity when she is a bit older.

One of my most commented on items when she wears it is her Boho festival jacket! I love the muted tones and Plum wears this a few days a week.

Let the pattern begin!

I was so pleased with how this faux fur gilet turned out, that Alice had to wear it right away!

Myself, her big brother and our furry baby Alfie went for a stroll through the fields. Trying to keep my live wire 2-year-old from taking off into a blur so I could grab a snap was challenging.

Although I think the action shots, just made me happier with my design, she's toastie and free, No bulky coat restricting her from being my little road runner. I got a cheese pose too....that face....swoon...love her to bits!

Pattern 12 - 24m

Materials:
12mm crochet hook
chinchilla yarn by James C. Brett was used in this pattern.
You could also try mixing two colours of eyelash yarn and using 2 strands at a time. Find lots of colours here Budget eyelash yarn

12-24m (135 yards)

1 x Large Button

Gauge: 10 rows x 7 stitches = 12cm square

Stitches:
Ch – chain
Sc – single crochet
Sc2tog – Single crochet two together

Notes: This yarn can be a bit tricky to work with.
The over all texture and fabric created is soft and reversible and does not look crochet. However, it is difficult to see the stitches as you work.
To make sure you do your rows correctly and don’t miss stitches, I have written most of this pattern in measurements rather than rows, you will be counting very little and will be a continuous number creating a square.
Feel the yarn between index finger and thumb as you go to find the centre of stitch.

Approx sizes for finished items:
12 – 24m = length 11” Width 10”

12 – 24m:

Front lapels –
Ch 10,
Row 1: Sc in second ch from hook, Sc across, Ch1, turn
**Row 2: Sc across, Ch1, turn
**Repeat row 2 until piece measures 6 inches

**Sc across 7 stitches, Ch1, turn
** Repeat another 5 inches
Finish off weave in ends. Make x2 of these pieces

Back piece –

Sc2tog, Sc across, Sc2tog in last 2 stitches, Ch1, turn
**Sc across, ch1, turn**
**Repeat another 5 inches

Finish off weave in ends.

Construction:
Flip over one of the lapels.
As this item is completely reversible there is no right/wrong sides.
Place the lapels on top of back piece and sew up the sides from bottom to arm hole.
(I used a dk black yarn to sew and construct piece its hidden by all the fur and a lot easier than trying to sew with the thickness of the pattern yarn)
Sew the shoulders from outside in 4 stitches- leaving 3 stitches un worked.
Turn right side out.

Sew button 2 stitches down on preferred side.
The stitch holes should be big enough to fasten and pulls piece together at the neckline.

You're now ready to rock your new gilet!
