I would not recommend using a heavier weight than DK. Thicker yarns would be difficult to keep the shape and would not show such an intricate definition.
Smaller hook?
2.5 and 3mm Hooks will work well with this pattern.
For 2.5mm hooks and corresponding yarn – Work 13 Dc into your magic circle (14Dc including chain 3) then repeat rounds 5&6 at the end of your pattern rounds.
3mm hook and corresponding yarn – repeat rounds 5&6 at the end of your pattern rounds.

Fasten off – leaving a long tail x2 lengths of the diameter of your circle
Weave in ends
Repeat rounds 1 – 6 to make a second half
No need to leave a long tail at the end for second piece
Fasten off weave in all ends
Assembling your Bauble.
Taking your yarn needle, thread your long tail from 1st piece Place both halves of your work on either side of your bauble Sew through the top of both sides of each piece – Front to back Picking up both loops of your Sc on both sides Whip stitch, front to back around your bauble Secure and weave in end!
