Alpine stitch – Easy Crochet stitch

 

A beautiful crochet stitch that creates a defined texture.

The Alpine stitch can be used for blankets, jumpers, scarves, beanies and many other projects!

The raised bumpy, defined effect is reminiscent of a valley of Alpine trees and gives a real professional touch to any design.

I love the amount of stretch and bounce it adds to my pieces, it gives plenty of ease to clothing and a soft bouncy affect to blankets – light and airy but with density!

 

 

For this stitch I recommend using 5-6 mm hook and yarn to match, thicker/thinner yarns can be used but the overall effect is more defined with this these size hooks.

Quick and easy projects!

This stitch works up really quick and if you have mastered the DC (Double crochet) stitch you are already there. The Alpine stitch is alternating rows of SC (single crochet), DC (Double crochet) and FPDC (Front post double crochet).

This beanie can be made in two ways depending on your preference and is a really good way of practicing your new stitch on a small project 🙂

 The Alpine crochet stitch

Notes: Always start with a row of SC (Single crochet).

Chain 1 and chain 2 will always start as the first stitch in a row!

Row 1

1 single crochet in each stitch, chain 2 turn

Row 2

Double crochet in each stitch, Chain 1 turn

 

Row 3

Single crochet in each stitch, chain 2 turn

Row 4

*1 front post double crochet in second stitch, 1 double crochet in next stitch. URepeat from * to the end of the row. Chain 1 and turn

Note: always end the row in a regular double crochet not a post double crochet

Row 5

Sc across, chain 1, turn

Row 6

*1 double crochet in second stitch, 1 front post double crochet in the next one. Make sure that where you have a double crochet on the previous row, you will make a front double crochet and where you have a front post double crochet you will make a double crochet.

You want to pop the double crochet from the previous row forward. If the double crochet is raised then do a regular double crochet in the sc space and the next stitch will be a front post double crochet bringing the stitch forward.

Repeat from * to the end of the row.

Repeat the rows 5 and 6 as long as you want to reach your desire length of your project.
